Penny Rug

A Penny rug is a popular style of art where decorative circles, traditionally made from felted wool, have been cut and sewn on a background of wool using a blanket stitch embroidery of contrasting colors. Dating from the mid 19th century to early 20th century, penny rugs were not generally used on the floor, but rather as decorative table rugs or wall hangings.

Along with the circles common in these decorative rugs, many of them are found to be framed or bordered in tongue shapes. The name Penny rug derives from the coins that were used as templates for the many circle shapes. The rugs are also known as coin rugs or dollar rugs.
